Terroir:

It is often said that Saint-Julien form a middle ground within the Médoc, a middle ground between the feminine wines of Margaux to the south and the more full-bodied wines of Pauillac to the north, from which they are separated only by a small stream.

The area of the appellation is rather small, on two large gravelly hilltops. 

The quality of the wines is generally quite consistent and regular.
